Unique Christmas Card Ideas That You Can Use

christmas-card.jpgThey are a familiar part of every Christmas. You line them up along the mantle, across the TV and on top of the refrigerator. Sometimes the only updates you get from old friends and distant family are in the yearly Christmas card. More often than you might like to admit, a Christmas card is the only news your friends and family get from you over the year. We are busy people and we get busier all the time. Christmas cards are somehow the one bit of writing on the list of communication “to do” list that we actually get done. For that reason, it is nice to make them special. Are you looking for unique Christmas card ideas to personalize your updates and warm wishes this year? With just a little time and creativity, you will send out treasured, eye-catching and heartwarming Christmas cards.

One common practice for individualizing Christmas cards is to include a family picture. It really is a great idea. The recipients gaze long and hard at those photos, trying to figure out how you and especially your children have changed so much. To make your Christmas cards truly unique, try experimenting with those family photos. Instead of dressing up and making a visit to the photographer, look through the candid shots you’ve taken. They are often more natural and show your family as they really are. Maybe you ride horses or bicycles. You’ve probably got pictures of your kids at the zoo or playing basketball. You might have a vacation picture of your family together, but you might just want to reprint and put pictures of individuals together. The mixed and matched photos will give the impression of a patchwork quilt, full of memories and love. The cards can be quickly printed in order to make as many copies as you need.

If you have a little more time, the collage idea can be taken to a different level. You probably have stashed away somewhere all of the Christmas cards you’ve received for the last six or seven years. Pull those out and start looking through them. You’ll get one more chance to relive them, but then be ready to tell them goodbye. Cutting up the cards and reassembling them will create beautiful and unique patterns. Glue the random pieces to a stiff piece of paper and you will be inventing new designs and patterns to suit your own taste. To finish these cards off, you can add photographs or trinkets to the outside. As long as you can find big enough envelopes (and you can experiment with size) you don’t even have to keep the chunks of old cards within the confines of a traditional card’s shape. Let your imagination run wild. These cards will definitely stand out of the row along the top of someone’s television.

When the work of constructing the outside is done, a truly unique card will have your inscription on its inside, instead of one from the greeting card company. Don’t be afraid to write things that you really think and feel instead of the traditional “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.” Use your sense of humor and let the real you shine through. Have your family help you too. The more personality you stuff into those cards, the better. It may require more time and effort than usual, but your work will be worth it. Who knows? With your homemade cards, you may just spark some effort on the other end as well. In return you may see some traditional letters and more frequent information from your loved ones.

You may not look forward to choosing Christmas cards when you take a look at the huge Christmas card selection at the local department or greeting card store. There are so many to choose from, and yet they all seem the same. You’ve been looking at cards long enough that the sentiment in them is hardly personal and even far from relevant to your own personality. Instead of buying a package of Christmas cards this year, try making your own. Starting with the couple of ideas here, you’ll be able to think of many more to individualize your handiwork. It is guaranteed that no one will have seen them or anything like them before. You’ll get a smile, maybe a chuckle, and even possibly a letter in return.

Baby’s First Christmas Stocking

A baby’s first Christmas stocking is a treasured memento you can create that will last a lifetime. Stockings hung on the fireplace mantel instill feelings of warmth, camaraderie and unity, as befits the season. The joy of a new baby should be marked at Christmas with a new stocking, a new life to be celebrated. Baby’s first Christmas stocking is a beautiful ritual, marking the entry of this little person into our lives.

A baby’s first Christmas stocking is one of a kind. A special acknowledgment of life’s beginning for this one unique individual. Parents of the baby probably have the best insight into their child’s personality, watching each smile and gurgle and wide-open eyes. Keep in mind that a baby’s first Christmas stocking should mirror your hopes and dreams for this baby’s successful and happy life.

A nature theme can produce a beautiful stocking. Include the elements of wonder so appropriate to a child’s discovery of life. Creeks, trees, flowers, sun and moon are among our first discoveries of life.

Buying Christmas Toys

Ah, is it that time of the year again? You know the one when the trees bare no leaves, the children are shuffling joyfully through the white icy powder, and sweet carols fill the air. Ah, Christmas time sure is a happy time for families to come together. It’s hard to beat the level of love that comes standard with the holiday season. Uh wait, it’s actually not even fall yet. But, anyway, we can still look forward to that wondrous special event full of comfort foods and gifts. Ah yes, there’s the key right there. What amazing new gifts will come at Christmas this year? It’s hard to tell, but I can already see my little one making her list. I don’t suppose children can ever receive too many toys for Christmas.

What do your little rugrats want this year? Are you aware of the hottest new toys for Christmas time? There’s the TMX Elmo, Nintendo Wii, and Playstation 3, just to name a few. It’s a tad difficult to stay on top of these things. How can you possibly sort through the masses? Furthermore, how can you keep all of these potential toys for Christmas straight when the kids are always changing their minds? This is a good question. However, if you can figure out what is on your child’s Christmas list ahead of time, you will surely be ahead of the game. Knowing is half the battle, as G.I. Joe used to say. You see, the trouble with waiting until the last minute is actually getting what you’re after. It’s tough to do. Virtually all the great toys are sold out. Now, I do realize that there are always more toys for Christmas to pick and choose from, but are they the ones off the list? Believe me when I say your child will notice. They always do. Once they get their little hearts set on specific toys for Christmas, you’d better find them quick. This is why I like to get the low-down in advance. I find out what my child wants for Christmas, and I purchase it in October. That’s a pretty decent head start. Everyone is consumed with Halloween at that point. This ensures that I get the toy I’m after.

You want to know the best place to find toys for Christmas? I will tell you flat out that it’s online. Hop onto Google.com and punch in the name of any toy you’re looking for. You will probably get Amazon.com popping up with a result. They typically have it all. Happy Christmas shopping!

Buying A Christmas Gift For A Man

I am sick of the marketing of Christmas, and I bet that you are as well by now. Oh, I know, people have talked to death about commercialism and consumerism and such, but these are not the things that anger me the very most. No, not at all. What angers me most is the way that our rigid roles are reinforced by the ways that people market their Christmas gift ideas.

This, they will say, is the right Christmas gift for a man, that the right Christmas gift for a woman, and the other, the perfect Christmas gift for a teenager – as if the whole personality of someone could come down simply to their gender and age. Let me say this plainly now, and not be misunderstood: there is no ideal Christmas gift for a male. They may tell you that a Christmas gift for a man is a pocket knife, or a new tie, or a war book, but all of that is hogwash.

The only perfect Christmas gift for a man is the gift that that man wants, and men are as different from each other as they are from women or teenagers.

Of course, I know that the companies market Christmas gifts for a man partly as a way to make things easy for the consumer. They want to put things that men usually want all together, so that when someone does go out and look for a Christmas gift for a man, they will see them all in one section. But beyond that, I think that the system of having men’s Christmas gifts and women’s Christmas gifts has a more sinister function. I think that they do it all to cement their hold over us. If a Christmas gift for a man is a pocket knife or a nice watch, then every year you have to buy all of the men in your life one of these things. And so on.

It is really every bit as sinister as all that, and I am not joking. There are people who spend years thinking about how to best market to a group of people, and this is how they think. They will try to make everyone buy the most expensive Christmas gift for a man that they can, and that way they will make more money. And money is, of course, what the holiday is all about for these companies.

Personally, I’d be happy with electronic gadgets, but that’s just me!

Giving Christmas Food Hampers As Gifts

In the Scottish tradition I decided to make Christmas food hampers for my friends and family this year. This may seem like a lot of work but it really isn’t if you have your technique down pat. The Scottish Christmas food hampers have been around for generations but it has never been so easy to create them until now.

I made a few some years back and I found the process to be exhausting. The two Christmas food hampers that I made were not well thought out and I just didn’t have the organizational skill to make the best use of my time and efforts. I thought that my days of making Christmas food hampers for the holidays were over before they really began.

That is until I discovered that you can create your very own arrangements online from the comfort of your home. I loved the process so much that I have to share my experience with you. It has never been so fun and easy to make a special gift arrangement than it is right now.

First of all, you want to choose the containers for the Christmas food hampers. There are typically three kinds of containers available. One is a lovely box that looks like a wrapped present. There is a postal box that is quite plain and more utilitarian in looks. Then there is my personal favorite; the picnic basket.

After you choose your container it is time to fill it with items listed on the site. You can choose from pastas and sauces or sweets or even beer and wine. There are many options and you can mix and match items as you go. I made three Christmas food hampers in one afternoon.

I have to admit that this is not in keeping with my Scottish heritage, though. I really should go out and try to find the best deals on the items that I use to fill the Christmas food hampers but that will come in time. I think that I need a little online practice first.

My future endeavors are already in the works. Next year, I am going to get organized ahead of time. Now that I have practiced on the Internet I think that I have the skill that it takes to create my own Christmas food hampers without help.

One of my hampers is going to go to my brother. I’m attaching a card that says, “You drive me nuts.” Inside this Christmas food hamper will be a collection of his favorite nutty treats including chocolate covered macadamias and pistachios. I’m even going to add some hazelnut liquor in the mix.

The best way to find inspiration for your own Christmas food hampers is to go online and make some for your friends and family this year. By next holiday season you will be flying solo.

Selecting Child Christmas Ornaments

The holiday season is such a magical time for children that there is little wonder that we embrace the images of kids for our holiday decorating. We also choose child Christmas ornament selections that appeal to kids and can be created by children as well during this most festive time of year.

The first child Christmas ornament that you probably have added to your collection is a keepsake that you will pass down from one generation to the next. This kind of holiday decoration is bought for a child when he is young and some families use the decoration as part of a tradition in their holiday decorating activities.

I used to hang a special decoration that was given to me by my grandmother when I was just a baby. This child Christmas ornament is still with me today and I make sure that I add it to the decorative tree before anything else. This keepsake will be with my family for generations.

Part of the appeal of the item is that it is specific to the things that were important to me when I was a baby. I love puppies and this love for the most wonderful animal on the planet was apparent before I could walk or talk. My grandmother chose a child Christmas ornament that featured this most beloved pet.

What makes the child Christmas ornament so special is that my grandmother took the time to add a note in the box giving the reason that she chose a puppy for the theme. I now tell my kids about my early affection for puppies and we share a little holiday time talking about our own child Christmas ornaments and why each one is important to us.

Maybe one day my kids will have an opportunity to share a special story associated with their memories as well. One of the best ways I have found to make a child Christmas ornament extra special is to make a project out of it. My kids love to make their own holiday decorations and there are lots and lots of ideas that can be found in craft books as well as online.

Now I have a whole collection of child Christmas ornaments in my home. Each precious item has a wonderful story behind it. Some are images of children while others are made by children. No matter what I find that nothing is more valuable than a child Christmas ornament during this time of year.

Ideas For A Cheap Christmas Gift

If your Christmas gift budget is anything like mine, you’re thinking about who you can take off of your list without offending anyone. But, after doing some brainstorming and thinking, I found numerous ways to not remove anyone’s name and find a cheap Christmas gift that would be suitable and unique to everyone. There are lots of cheap Christmas gift ideas that are to be found, though some of them might require a bit of time and energy. If you’re willing to put some holiday spirit into those cheap Christmas gift ideas, then you may be receiving lots of hugs and kisses this Christmas.

My favorite of all of the cheap Christmas gift ideas was to make things for the intended recipients. Whether it be some type of food or an item for the house, homemade gifts are not only very appreciated but make a wonderful cheap Christmas gift that contains a great amount of love. If the recipient is a big fan of fudge, cookies or even cake – run with that idea. Fudge and candy can be made with little expense and lots of bowl licking for your family members. Once you have fudge or candy made, you can wrap it in festive cellophane or boxes tied with ribbon. Yummy treats are a wonderful way to win some points in gift giving. Making a cake is a great cheap Christmas gift that can be just as delightful as candy or fudge. Find out your recipient’s favorite flavor and make that. Add some creative decorating flair to it and it will be received with smiles.

If you’re not much for spending time in the kitchen, there are many other cheap Christmas gift ideas that don’t involve cooking. If you visit a craft store, such as A.C. Moore, there are tons of ideas for making a cheap Christmas gift. You can make beautiful candles at a low cost, small wreathes, candle holders, pot holders, and knit lots of different items. Knitting something heartfelt for someone is a wonderful way to show your creativity and love for others and is a cheap Christmas gift that won’t break your wallet. I knitted a few scarves for family members and they all loved them tremendously. Knitting all of them simply cost me the price of the yarns and I made 3 scarves for less than $10.00. I managed to cross 3 names off of my list at for a low cost.

Another cheap Christmas gift idea is to create a coupon book for someone. You can include coupons for babysitting, massages, breakfast in bed, car washes, dish duty, almost anything that the recipient may appreciate. This idea may work best for people who live in the same household and would appreciate you helping with chores or some extra attention.

Using your imagination and putting some extra love into finding a cheap Christmas gift can leave the recipients incredibly pleased and your wallet a bit fuller.
